My team and I created two powerful websites, 3 monetized YouTube channels, and uploaded more than 10 thousand videos to YouTube. Our combined subscriber count is well over 400 thousand and still growing. Throughout our 5-year journey, we noticed most who want to start a YouTube channel or try to make income online do not understand the computer well enough and don’t have a clue where to start. I remember searching through all the how-to courses, some very costly, some cheaper, but none of them came with a coach who will take the time to explain a little deeper the things we did not understand.
So, The Music Recording Network course was born.
We have seen so many new so-called studio engineers talk about how to set up for music, but they always miss the mark. So what makes us the real professionals? Keep reading to find out why.
At the tender age of seven, with the strums of a lead guitar, Mike began his expedition into the world of music. He didn’t just stop at mastering his own instrument; he explored the realms of bass, drums, and more, laying the foundation for a diverse and vibrant studio recording career.
Mike’s talent was quickly recognized, leading him to play in various school bands and winning accolades. His high school years saw him flaunting his skills with the Go-Go band, Eastside. From there, he stepped up to play the bass for the renowned Prophecy Band, stepping into the shoes left by the illustrious Me’Shell Ndegeocello. His time with Prophecy wasn’t just about strumming the bass; it was about understanding the intricacies of the music business and mastering the art of recording in home studios and live sound mixing. The first thing you need to understand, according to Mike Cross, is there is a big difference in how to record in a professional home studio and recording live music. These two things can only be learned through experience.
Mike’s prowess and dedication led him to rub shoulders with the greats: Doug-E-Fresh, Heavy D., Max Kid, and once again, Me’Shell Ndegeocello.
Mike found himself at Night Flight Studios, gaining invaluable experience working alongside legends like Stacy Lattisaw, Tonya Blunt, Zip Band, and Mikie Howard. Working in a studio that is already set up does not give you the full understanding of how everything is routed to get a complete understanding. But seeing how to set up a professional studio from the beginning gave Mike Cross a new outlook on home studios.
Mike Cross remembers being afraid of going on tour because he understood mixing and running sound in a home studio is much different live. Mike has worked on tours with Mikie Howard, Christopher Williams, Men At Large, and Faith Evans (Biggie Smalls’ Wife). While on tour, Mike learned professional tips from well-known sound engineers that he still uses today.
No feedback during the show. This is your #1 goal as a professional live sound engineer. But in a studio, you don’t worry about feedback as much, and if you do hear feedback, you just do another take. If your studio booth and mic are set up correctly, you will not have to worry about feedback in a home studio if you take the time to set it up professionally.
When he revived MC Sounds, his studio became a beacon for artists from across the region, eager to encapsulate the unique MC Sounds aura. See, because Mike Cross took the time to learn and understand sound engineering, it was showing in every recording he was in no matter what home studio he recorded out of. The studio’s reputation opened doors to collaborations with Cut Close, Total, Willie Blunt, and the iconic Teddy Pendergrass. It’s all about setting up professionally first, then you can get the sound and feel you need to record and mix the music right. Mike’s magic touch also paved the way for budding groups, leading them to sign with renowned labels like Sony, Arista, Bad Boy, and Motown.
Setting up your home studio professionally is just the start of what Mike Cross does now, he teaches how to make hit songs by learning the elements of a hot song, how to produce music and not just make a beat. Mike teaches music skills that come from years of playing instruments, understanding live sound inside and out, and building, wiring up studios, and recording famous and up-and-coming artists. After 15 years of doing professional studio recording, it is clear that Mike Cross can teach you how to set up your home base studio to get the most professional sound from the start.
However, the true transformation in Mike’s life was spiritual. Embracing faith, he began using his talents for a higher cause, working with non-profits, contributing to gospel recordings, and even playing a role in the stage play “A Sheep in Wolves Clothing”.
